1/10/2024 0 Comments Night owl camera setupThe imaging train would be pretty simple as well - C8 SCT threads to f6/3 focal reducer, then SCT to 42 or 48mm T-thread (I forget which the 294 takes), then T-thread extension rings to camera. I forget the exact number, but the 6.3 reducer should be able to cover something like a 24mm image circle with the same amount of vignetting as the 0.4x at 16mm, enough for the MC294 sensor. I would say that the C8 with the 294 is a very good starting point. That might not work on EdgeHD scopes since I think they have some optics in the baffle tube?Īgain, I'm not asserting that any of this can or should work. But if it worked it might mean a 2" Night Owl peeking out of the visual back (the Night Owl might have the visual back incorporated?) and 1.25" connections thereafter. So if Starizona were to adopt the Agos idea could they set things up so that they could fit something like the Night Owl inside the rear of the SCT and grab the entirety of the image circle and hopefully when the image circle left the Night Owl it would be small enough to go through 1.25" gear? I really do not claim to know that this would work at all let alone knowing that it would work well. So what you'd be doing was to minimize the amount of stuff you were hanging out of the rear cell of the SCT. IIRC, Ted Agos developed a system where the idea was to slip the optics inside the baffle tube. No argument with you on that but I'm wondering. ![]() Re: #3, oversimplifying a bit but if you take the 16mm image circle from the Night Owl and divide by 0.4 reduction you need to start with ~40mm, too big to fit in a 1.25" barrel. Sorry for all of the questions, but thanks in advance for your help! What's the reason there is no 1.25 inch Night Owl reducer? Something specific about reducer optics? Would have loved to stay consistent with the 1.25 inch visual observing setup I've been using, but perhaps not such a big deal. Would the final configuration here be scope to 2 inch visual back to Night Owl reducer to ASI 294MC? What about adapters to connect these and spacers for proper backfocus?ģ. How problematic is this? I'm not at all familiar with the software side yet, but is it true the "region of interest" functionality would make this a non-issue?Ģ. My understanding is that the Night Owl gives a good image over a 16mm circle and the 294MC sensor is larger than this. Definitely would love to get any feedback on this as a first time EAA setup with the 8SE, but also had a couple of specific questions I was hoping to get thoughts on.ġ. ![]() I'm an 8SE owner in a fairly light polluted area (50 min north of NYC) looking to take the plunge into EAA to get more details on DSOs and planets during live observing.īased on all my research so far I've been gravitating towards getting started with the ZWO ASI294MC and Starizona Night Owl 0.4x reducer. Hi all, it's my first time posting here, but I've been loving all the great content on the forum.
